Gallery 825, home of the Los Angeles Art Association (LAAA) founded in 1925, will be hosting simultaneous solo exhibitions in each of its four galleries. The event will mark the largest assemblage of emerging artist Julie Lipa’s work to date.
The show will be from April 15 – May 19th. Opening reception is April 15th. Artist reception from 10am – 5pm.
Julie Lipa's show’s titled “Beneath Perfection: The Underside of America’s Mid-Century Belle Epoche” will feature several of Julie’s pieces surrounding a period 1950’s living room installation. A video component will complement the focus of the works.
Julie Lipa’s Lipalux subjects build out from a mid-century artifact affixed to the artwork that serves as the focal point. The focus of her topics, that may or may not be well-known by today’s average American, span from the mid 1930s to the late 1960s. As decades pass these themes are revisited with historical context. The stories about forced adoptions, atomic testing, airlines stewardess’ role in the air, become clear. What may appear as a pleasant composition from a distance reveals a historical look at how the advertising industry or journalism viewed these topics. Spokesmodels from vintage appliance ads seem to be responding to the artifact, drawing you in.
The exhibition will display mixed media originals, several of them large scale.
