This piece is about the history of women’s rights and smoking. In the early 20th century, as American women adopted the European habit of smoking, backlash followed. New York City’s 1908 Sullivan Ordinance banned women from smoking in businesses, and some women were even arrested for lighting up in their own homes. In 1929, Lucky Strike exploited the women’s emancipation movement in a manipulative PR campaign to encourage women to smoke. Though it succeeded, critics soon shifted to policing how women smoked, insisting they learn to do so in a “feminine” way to remain appealing to men.
Tobacco smoke clouds inside a room tend to hang in mid-air rather than disperse. The smoke rises to the ceiling and spreads outward, displacing cooler air and pushing it toward the floor. Smoke will spread horizontally along the ceiling until it finds an opening that allows it to reach a higher level.
