A Museum, an Art Fair and a Renovation
The world has become more chaotic and uncertain, so having art deadlines has been a welcome distraction. I hope you’re finding something to keep you occupied and grounded.
My best, recent distraction was dropping off Motown at the Ontario Museum of History and Art’s 13th Biennial Open Art Exhibition.
The obligatory photo
The intake process was thorough and professional. They noted all the existing damage and I had to laugh and say that everything they spotted was deliberate. (“all mistakes are intentional!”) Motown is a piece about how the record label helped change segregated radio. The show runs from May 1 – July 20th and there’s a community reception on May 3rd. If you’re nearby, come check it out.
The polishing up before the intake photos.
Every day I’ve been adding and checking off things to do to get ready for the upcoming San Francisco StARTup art fair, in just over a week. This is my first time participating in this type of event, and I’ve quickly learned just what a huge project I’ve gotten myself into.
Find me in room #318
I’ll be showcasing new work from my “Pulp Fission: Classic Comics Reconstructed” series. The show runs from April 18-20th and I’ll be in room #318. If you plan on attending and need tickets, get in touch through IG or my contact page. I may have some comp tickets for you.
Finishing up my first super-sized piece while my studio is in transition.
One thing I can advise: avoid scheduling an art show while simultaneously emptying your garage for a major renovation. The garage, which is my studio space, holds 30 years of accumulated stuff—business records from my entertainment marketing company (which closed in 2018), a huge vintage Bugs Bunny collection from the ‘80s (stored since 2005), and boxes of curated assemblage materials I thought I might use one day… but never did.
As we cleared out box after box of “Why are we keeping this?” (and stored it somewhere else in the house!), it was time to declutter. At least a quarter of our possessions will be donated to those affected by the wildfires, including the artists who lost their art supplies.
Just part of the donated goodies for assemblage artists in need.
Ok, it’s time to say it. “My name is Julie and I am a hoarder!” But that’s soon to be a thing of the past. Here are “before” pictures of the garage studio. I’m looking forward to sharing the “after” pictures once the renovation is complete, but that’ll have to wait until August.
Garage “before” shot. I have no shame.
Recycled trash
The original work bench that came with the house served me well.
Thanks for following along and hopefully we’ll meet up somewhere and celebrate.
Cheers,
Julie
