Joseph Kent, the Director of Curaration and Exhibition at Smithsonian Affiliate The Atomic Museum where "Doomtown" currently resides on loan, called it "a one-of-a-kind mixed media masterpiece." The Atomic Museum is located in Las Vegas, Nevada where Doomtown is available for purchase.
In 1955, a prefab ghost town was built at the Nevada Nuclear Test Site, 65 miles north of Las Vegas. Named Doomtown, its purpose was to test how structures would withstand an atomic bomb blast.
Not surprisingly, Las Vegas capitalized on the testing with viewing parties, special cocktails, and the search for Miss Atomic Bomb. Atomic fever and bomb-watching were all the rage, luring thrill-seeking tourists to the closest spots possible to ground zero. Atomic tourism brought in thousands of jobs while pumping $176 million into the local economy.
Mushroom clouds from the early dawn atmospheric tests could be seen up to 100 miles away in the distance.
