Julie Lipa creates historical documentations of America's Mid-century era. Portions of vintage appliances such as TV sets and radios anchor three dimensional works underpinned by photo transfer collage and topped by a resin-coated spokesmodel. A numbered, metal plate bearing her brand "Lipalux" certifies authenticity.
Her new series, "Forbidden Comics: The Dirty Secrets Between the Panels", dispenses with the retro artifact, moving her from journalism to social commentary. Over the course of several months she curated and categorized countless comics panels from thousands of public domain comic books. Now, taken out of their original context, she delivers a fresh narrative, laying bare the violent, sexist, queer or risqué messaging that simply wasn't permissible in Mid-century America.
